Penang:

MRI/MSKUS Correlation Course for Radiologists took place at the wonderful Holiday Inn Resort in Penang. The materials were high quality color photograph slides- on photopaper which must have cost a fortune to print.
The topics: knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, and ankle were covered in depth for both MRI interpretation and MSKUS, in a very clear and concise manner. There was significant time dedicated to each of the joints according to the modality most useful for the joint.  There was plenty of practice time on the ultrasounds in a grand room with high ceiling and continous flow of expresso from a expensive coffee machine. Many  major companies supported this event  with high end MSKUS machines from Phillips, Esaote, and Aloka.
The location of the course is very scenic and indeed a great choice. The food during the course is “abundance and overflowing”. Could not ask for more.  It reflects the excellent tastes of Penang food.
The night market which starts just outside the hotel stretches over half a kilometer with clothes , bags , souveniers etc etc was just great and so colourful.  My wife had a great time with our 5 year old.  She loved the pool .  There are also dozens of restaurants on this stretch for every taste and of course travel to Little India for some great North Indian food. 
 
Overall, this course is suitable for those with the intention of seeking basic to intermediate musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI reading skills. I think the organiser has his mind set on a more advanced course in the future for those who have attended the basic course and this time the focus will be just going over more difficult advanced cases.
 
Overall, this is a very high quality course taught by someone I now consider my mentor and a Master Class Teacher, in a place you can take your family on holiday as well. I highly recommend it !!!

Just checking in - I've had a n incredible couple of weeks with MSKUS. Its completely changed the way I practice. Last week I had 3 ACL tears with the indirect findings on US, elbow UCL partial tears, RTC tendinosis,  TFCC tear suspected, the works.I love this stuff. Thanks again for everything. 
 
 I find it so easy to understand all the journal articles in MRI and Ultrasound in Musculoskeletal Radiology now .  So I can read up anything I felt was not covered in depth due to lack of time at the conference.  I am glad to hear the course will be extended to a full  4 days to show more MRI of the wrists and ankles with homework.  
 
ONE THING FOR SURE ONE NEED NOT ATTEND ANY MORE COURSES ON MSK MRI AND ULTRASOUND AT INTERMEDIATE TO EARLY ADVANCED LEVEL ANYMORE .

MSK Course Evaluation
This is a fairly well-organised radiology course aiming to teach fundamental principles in musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI, with emphasis on the strengths and weaknesses of each modality in assessing  various joints. The principle lecturer and tutor for this course is currently Professor of Radiology at University of Malaya. He is a very enthusiastic and gifted teacher, and presents his knowledge of musculoskeletal radiology in a way that is very easy to understand.
One of the strength of the course is having MRI cases each night to go over briefly prior to discussion in the following morning (those with "holidays" in mind may not agree). The presentations correlating the US and MRI on various aspect of MSK investigations are very helpful.  The large amount of extra materials provided on the preloaded USB is certainly very useful both as a good reading and reference after the course.
The location of the course is very scenic and indeed a great choice. The food during the course is “abundance and overflowing”. Could not ask for more.  It reflects the excellent tastes of Penang food.

I'm sorry for my late reply. We stayed for a few more days in KL before flying back home and so I didn't have the chance to check my emails.

 

As I have been telling my colleagues the minute I got back, your course is something they should plan on attending in the future. It's a must for any radiologist doing MSK imaging. We are indeed very lucky that you have the unwavering zeal for teaching as not everyone has the vocation for it. 

 

Your technique in doing ultrasound is simple and practical. I love the one touch and reverse one touch technique that you taught us and how the left hand is just as important as the right hand with stabilisation.
 
Your course is well-worth the fees you charge even though initially I thought it was very expensive. 
 
 Penang is beautiful from my hotel window.  Because of the extensiveness of the course, I didn't have the chance to explore the Island during the course  but Batu Ferringhi with its wonderful nearly half km night market and wondeful restaurants with all kinds of food was enough to keep us occupied in the evening/night.  However by spending a few extra days of holiday , I was able to enjoy a holiday in your country.
 
The course was no nonsense with all those lectures, hands-on and homework for one hour per night.  Best is to combine the conference with 3 or 4 days holiday in Penang or jet someone else nice nearby for 4 days of rest which you will need after this intensive course. Then your expenses are divided by the course and holiday and does not seem so bad after all .

 

As I have probably told you earlier on, I'm more interested in MR imaging, specially of the small joints hence my only regret is that I wasn't able to see more MR cases of the elbows, ankles and wrists. But, I am still grateful for all the ultrasound knowledge and skill I was able to acquire. The photo paper hand-out is something I will continually be using.
 
I note that you have realised that some of us want more MRI of the smaller joints(provided for in 2011 Penang course) despite the trend now to much better diagnosis with ultrasound when one can magnify and zoom and follow each tendon and ligament and have increased the course to four and half days to accomodate this.  So the course now will truly be the most complete course in the major joints for both MSK MRI and Ultrasound.  You will also  now include MRI of the hip which is great.

 

It was splendid for you and the organizers to provide us with ultrasound machines to use and the full time paid models all the way from your department from Kuala Lumpur . It must have cost quite a bit to bring them , accomodate and pay them for the three and a half days.  They were great.
 
The food, by the way, was plentiful. As one other foreign participant asked me, "Do Malaysians really eat this much?" sums it all.

I had a lot of fun learning and mingling with all the candidates during the MSK MRI and Ultrasound course in Penang.

 

The materials provided during the course has definitely helped with my MSK MRI reporting and I  have definitely learned a lot of MSK  US during the course. I think the facilitators of the course were very helpful and the presentations correlating the US and the MRI were particularly helpful.  Perhaps the course needs to slightly longer to show more MRI videos after the intensive lectures .  But of course the course fee would become more expensive .  Another way is to extend it to 6pm on Saturday.  

  

The extra materials that was provided on the preloaded USB was so much more than I  expected and I think it will take me some time to go through it .  As Prof George has said the course is not complete for us till we have gone through all the materials which will reinforce what we have learned but now all these materials will make "much more sense" having undergone the course.   It is amazing now as I read these articles , it all makes sense and I can read from the literature articles in areas of MRI not covered in the course due to lack of time , and it all makes sense because of the solid foundation in recognising the MRI and Ultrasound anatomy.    The venue was in a very scenic spot..... being a Penangite.... I  can vouch for that.

 

As for the food.... well again being a Penangite.... I  think the food could have reflected the excellent tastes of Penang food a bit more.

 

 Well over all,  I have benefited a lot from the course and in comparison to most of the other courses I have attended , this course was fairly well managed. The lectures started on time, were to the point with a lot of examples which were helpful and precise.

Intensive musculoskeletal MRI and Ultrasound hands on course Penang March 24-27

The course conducted by Prof John George of the University of Malaya that I as a general radiologist from India attended was an intensive 3 and a half days program at the Holiday Inn , Penang.

In my view, the following are the strengths and weaknesses;

Strengths:

The small controlled delegate numbers to facilitate better hands on work, opportunity to clarify all doubts, get ample time with the program experts.

The crossover from MRI to Ultrasound in the same sessions and immediate recapitulation of the theoretical concepts.

Introduction of new concepts like ‘one touch’ instant evaluation of structures to make Ultrasound exams surer and swifter.

The homework list of MRI cases and the discussion sessions at the start of the next day.

The free and paid for course material (collected and arranged with a lot of effort , adds a lot to the sessions.)

Presence of experts in their fields as facilitators.

 Use of several studies done at UMMC which are useful in reporting MSK MRI and doing MSK ultrasound - eg bowtie sign what it means in Asian context, MRI anterior drawer sign,  new technique to assess synovitis in small joints which is much simpler than present techniques taught in literature.

Importance of solving the patients ACTUAL problem and not just issuing a report - based on specific questions which he asks, pointed physical examination including tips in this area and finally the choice of modality which will be more appropriate in the circumstance .  I am fascinated that he gets much less referral for superficial ligaments and tendons of the ankle and wrist which is much better assessed with ultrasound.  Ultrasound was shown by Prof George to be far more accurate to assess the ligaments of the wrist , elbows and ankles.
Having said that, there are weaknesses which can probably be corrected in subsequent courses

The scope of the course- it is not for advanced musculoskeletal radiologists in my opinion. The course program is fairly basic with emphasis on correct techniques , solid foundation in basics etc. A comprehensive coverage of pathology is not done( as indeed it is not possible , considering 1) the intensive hands on nature, 2)limited time and 3) instruction required for the common denominator of participants-generalists with an interest in MSK work)

Therefore, I would suggest the following:

A thorough vetting of participants to ensure the course meets the requirements of those who are seeking to attend.
An Index of Lecture Content and depth of content  - so the expectations are met.  ( THIS HAS BEEN DONE FOR PENANG 2011)

A follow up course on advanced MSK imaging, as Prof George has already planned-again following the same participant sifting model to make sure it is not beyond the scope of some participants.

 Finally…..

Personally , it was a very useful course, consolidating my basic knowledge base and providing me a systematic way of reporting MSK cases. The rest is up to me to take the practical points learned and use the resource material provided to the next level.

The course is a very important venture in Asia where subspecialty Radiology work is still in infancy. Most radiologists have a mistaken notion they are reporting accurately but will be surprised at how much they are actually missing in reporting aftger they attend this course. 
Having interacted with most of the participants, the program is fairly on target. Coming from India where there are pockets of really advanced MSK work going on , it would be prudent to be very clear about the target participants.

Here is a list of what you can do from a radiologist who was on our course in Jakarta who spent 4 extra days in  Jakarta .

What we did was we plan our own trips as we had enough time on our hand.The hotel informed us they have tours in th  morning and afternoon which would cost around £35 - £45 depending on the number of persons. We took the itinerary  from them and took a Blue bird taxi and visited the places of interest on our own which worked well for us.The places we had visited are

 

Manga Dua - for cheap clothes shopping - can get good deals if we bargain but need to buy in 3 (4th and 5th floors)

 

Gladock (china town) for computer and electronics.

 

Kempang for designer shopping very very cheap - no bargainng but still cheaper.

 

Blok M for soveniers and other things.

 

Jalan Surabaya for antiques - start with 30 % of asking price and settle for 40%.

 

Plenty of malls around for good food - Pacific place plaza.

 

We went around all the places in the brochure on our own  - all important landmarks in Jakarta. 

 

As taxis are cheaper it worked well for us and didnt pay for the waiting charge or any tips to the driver. We just took a Bluebird taxi -safest in the world - from place to place without the taxi waiting.

What we did was we plan our own trips as we had enough time on our hand.The hotel informed us they have tours in th  morning and afternoon whihc would cost around £35 - £45 depending on the number of persons. We took the itinerary  from them and took a Blue bird taxi and visited the places of interest on our own which worked well for us.The places we had visited are

 

Manga Dua - for cheap clothes shopping - can get good deals if we bargain but need to buy in 3 (4th and 5th floors)

 

Gladock (china town) for computer and electronics.

 

Kempang for designer shopping very very cheap - no bargainng but still cheaper.

 

Blok M for soveniers and other things.

 

Jalan Surabaya for antiques - start with 30 % of asking price and settle for 40%.

 

Plenty of malls around for good food - Pacific place plaza.

 

We went around all the places in the brochure on our own  - all important landmarks in Jakarta. 

 

As taxis are cheaper it worked well for us and didnt pay for the waiting charge or any tips to the driver.

I had attended the Jakarta MSK ultrasound course during March 2010.This is a pretty well-organised radiology ultrasound course  teaching the  basic principles in musculoskeletal ultrasound with plenty of hands on supervised training. The main strength of the course is the small  number of delegates with individual attention so we get more hands on training which was so useful to master our techniques.

This course had helped me to refresh my knowledge of musculoskeletal ultrasound and also master the techniques in a simpler way. Prof John was always around and making sure we all did practice the right scanning techniques and also shared his wide experiences in the scanning techniques. He shared so many tricks of the trade as he really wanted us to be able to do the examinations when we went home.   After the course I personally feel that there are heaps of  take home points, clinical history you should ask,  clinical symptoms that might point to particular conditions , when to use to MRI and Ultrasound ,  how to optimise each joint examination and his lecture is full of real life anecdotes which make it lively and easy to listen too.   He will stop sometimes in his lecture and insist we write down some of the most pertinent points in our voluminous set of finest quality photopaper powerpoint notes. ( 1 kg of notes)

 

When compared to many other courses around the world that I have attended  ,  I feel this is comparatively a good well organised course with good quality notes and power point presentations in photopaper print quality so it can be used as a textbook to compare the normal and abnormal images when we are doing our scans .  The course is also  cheaper! Moreover everyday we did have a set of home work as Powerpoint quiz questions also in his set of wonderful notes and  this really helped in many ways to improve our understanding of the general anatomy and also the pathology and help us understand the points he was making eg how to distinguish tendinosis and tear .

Coming from Europe I felt the quality of food was excellent and we had a chance to taste the local cuisine on one afternoon with Prof John and Prof Daniel. I did stay at one of the hotel(4star) recommended by the organisers at about US70.00 per night wtih two breakfast(near some big shopping centres) and as it is long way from Europe we came pretty early and also stayed  few days more after the course to make the maximum out of this trip to Jakarta. My family did enjoy every minute of their stay in Jakarta and also did some good shopping and sightseeing.

I can strongly suggest that this course is useful for any budding MSK radiologist to refresh or strengthen their techniques in the MSK ultrasound scanning. I am sure this Jakarta course was for beginners and those who are intermediate but without a solid foundation .  I would like to attend one of the future MSK ultrasound and MRI courses on offer.  No doubt Prof John is an excellent teacher. As a bonus he did give us a chance to purchase his vast collection of notes which includes MRI and US images articles  at a nominal price which comes in handy while doing your scans or as a reference.  This must have taken a long time to compile and in future I believe he intends to charge one registration fee for all materials he considers mandatory to successful learning both at the course and as post -course reading to seal our knowledge . This will be provided on a pre-loaded  4GB USB (virus free) with his quiz  book of 51 common cases  and book chapters included.

Jakarta: Excellent introduction to musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) for sports medicine physicians - teaches you what you need to know to get started in the clinic the day you get back from the course. Dr. George teaches in a way that really simplifies the technique and gives you effective visual tools to remember how to position the probe to make sure the entire structure you're evaluating is visualized. The course materials included excellent color photograph slides and very useful anatomy illustrations. The lectures covered great breadth and depth of normal images and a variety of pathologies for all the joints, so that when scanning you will begin to recognize the various muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.

Jakarta is bustling Asian city with friendly people and wonderful cusine. We stayed at the Hotel Atlet which was a very nice hotel including a great breakfast buffet. I highly reccommend this course to my fellow sports physicians to gain a solid foundation in MSKUS !!! The course is a great value at half the price of US courses for the same quality and you can combine it with a holiday in beautiful SE Asia.
